For the past several years, the City of Hinesville, located in
Liberty County Georgia has been developing and implementing strategies to
revitalize its downtown and adjacent areas. The City is implementing its
Downtown Redevelopment Master Plan which involves recommendations to drive the
economic and transportation ventures of the City of Hinesville in order to
create A New Hinesville.
Hinesville has many historical resources and a bright future for
tourism, economic development, redevelopment and transportation. In particular,
Memorial Drive in historic downtown Hinesville will be a viable live, work,
play community offering amenities seen in many urban areas. The goal will be
achieved by:
|

|
Converting
blighted or unused property into viable
commercial businesses and residential housing |
|
|

|
Restoring the appropriate
historical appearance of buildings
|
|
|

|
Improving the integration
of vehicle and pedestrian traffic |
|
Redevelopment of Brownfield sites will foster a more rapid
redevelopment of historic Hinesville and will positively influence
stakeholders, such as business owners, developers and the local community
toward the vision of a revitalized downtown.
Project Description
Using a 2005 US EPA Grant the City of Hinesville assessed properties
along Memorial Drive for possible contamination. The properties were identified
based on their former use as automotive shops and service stations. Two sites
were selected for cleanup. The City of Hinesville applied for and was a warded
two Brownfield Cleanup Grants by the US EPA. The proper cleanup of the
brownfield sites at 116 and 123 Memorial Drive will move the City forward and
assist in its redevelopment and revitalization plans.
Both 116 and 123 Memorial Drive sites have now been
cleaned up, having had the underground storage tanks
and associated contamination removed or remediated
by a team of qualified and experienced environmental
professionals. Click on each site’s respective link
to learn more about their cleanups and their current
status.
