123 Memorial Drive: Project Overview

In 2007, under a separate EPA Region 4 assessment grant, soil and groundwater samples were collected from 123 Memorial Drive to determine if the site’s operation as a repair facility and earlier as a service station had impacted the soils and groundwater. The site at the time was being operated as Al’s Auto Repair and originally was constructed in the 1950s as a SOC service station. The property is approximately a 0.67 acre parcel and is now owned by the City of Hinesville. The property is bounded on the north by Memorial Drive, on the west by Welborn Street, and on the east by a vacant property now owned by the City and to the south by a church.

The property was operated as a service station until the early 1980s and the original underground gasoline and waste oil storage tanks were still in place when the project began. The results of the 2007 assessment revealed that soil and groundwater had been impacted by gasoline and other petroleum related products. See the Phase II Assessment page for additional details on the assessment results.

Under a separate EPA Brownfield grant for site cleanups, the City of Hinesville contracted with Arrowood Environmental Group, Inc. to complete the site cleanup. Beginning in 2009, the site clean up included the demolition of the building and removal of the underground storage tanks along with remediation of the soil and groundwater. The project is completed and is now awaiting final review and approval by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.
